Eric and Laura Surman have lived in the Blue Ridge Estates neighborhood of Cranberry Township since 2004. They are the parents of Aiden (9), Gavin (5), an insulin-dependent diabetic, and Camryn (2.) Laura is a registered nurse and Eric is a self-employed contractor. Eric is very active in the CTAA as a little league coach.
On July 20, 2009, little Camryn suffered a hypoxic brain injury after an accident at home. That morning, Laura found Camryn in respiratory and cardiac arrest and immediately began CPR while 911 was called.
After being Life-Flighted to Children's Hopstial, Camryn was placed into a hyothermic state for 72 hours and subsequently spent a week in a medically induced coma. MRIs revealed severe brain injury to her basal ganglia, pons, and thalamus. After six weeks in the pediatric ICU, Camryn was sent to the Children's Institute for a short time. Now being cared for at home, she remains in a moderate coma state.
Camryn requires 24-hour care and monitoring. She makes no purposeful movement, is non-verbal, breathes through a tracheotomy and requires ventilator support at night.
Please join us as our community rallies around the 2010 Inspirational Family to show support; to lift their spirits; to relieve some of their burdens; and, to bring some normalcy back to their family. With the help of the Cranberry CUP, the Surman’s will receive immediate financial assistance so that they can focus on providing the aggressive therapy Camryn needs to achieve and maintain a better quality of life.
